80's Video Games Influence the Contemporary Arts

The nostalgia of the 80's has been simmering in the fashion world for several years. It is perhaps not a surprise that the pop culture of the 80's is also rearing its head in the art world.

We have seen graffiti, which was once considered a vulgar expression of inner-city youth, become a tool for marketers and embraced as a creative outlet for urban artists.

This was made apparent on a recent episode of 'The Apprentice', Donald Trump's reality program aimed to select a candidate from a group of smart, resourceful and business minded men and women. One of the tasks given to them on the series included creating an advertisement for a new game. They were to create a graffiti inspired advertisement on the side of a building to be used as a billboard.

Well, if Donald Trump has given his approval..

Speaking of games, another big hit in the 80's was video games - Pac Man, Mario Brothers and others were played by most teens at one time or another. These teens are now adults looking back with a hint of nostalgia at their youth, despite the fact that it was only 15-20 years ago. But technology changes quickly and so these icons of the 80's are now being featured in art galleries like Gallery Nineteen Eighty Eight in Hollywood.

The gallery features pieces that take a contemporary look at video games and is possibly helping to create a new genre in the field.

A painting depicting Pac Man as over-the-hill and on a drip of pellets went for $3000 according to a Reuters press release.

The artist, Greg Simkins, claimed he started out by painting graffiti in back alleys before working with canvas. And he's not the only one bringing this strange combination of video and art to the public.

So what should we expect in the next five years? Well, for the art world change is always good, although often criticized in its formative years. So we may have to wait and see if 'video-game art' will make a solid stand in the art community. What we do know is that the original game players are now coming into their 40's and anyone under that age will have grown up with video games as a part of their childhood, just as 'I Love Lucy' was a part of another generations'. Because of that, the images will likely have an emotional pull and impact on new and existing collectors today.

Stock Market Simulation Games

A stock market simulation game is a great way to practice your investment skills before actually investing any "real" money in the stock market.

Simulation games are usually played on the internet, where people can experience the thrill of investing in the stock market without any risks, costs or any fear of losing money when and if they make a poor investment decision.

Many teachers and professors of banking and finance are now using stock market simulation games to teach their students about the rudiments of investing in stocks. Most stock market simulation games come with a fee to get started, but there are some that are free of any charge. One does not need have prior knowledge about the stock market to join.

This is how stock market simulation games usually work:

First, players must register. After registration, players are given an initial sum of "virtual" money to invest in companies of their choice. Players build a portfolio of stocks by buying and selling shares in companies. Most stock market simulation games use real-time market data.

The objective of most stock market simulation games is simple:

To increase the value of your portfolio of stocks so that it is greater than that of the other game players.

Below are some tips on choosing a stock market simulation game:

• Choose a stock market simulation game that is used and recommended by reputable colleges, high schools, middle school, investment clubs, brokers in training, corporate education courses and any other group of individuals studying markets in the U.S. and worldwide.

• Choose a stock market simulation game that is comprehensive and easy to implement in any Finance, Economics, or Investments class. A good stock market simulation game should feature trading of stocks, options, futures, mutual funds, bonds from the U.S. and many of the world's major markets.

• Choose a stock market simulation game that provides a valuable, reliable, and realistic trading simulation at a reasonable price to members and other individuals who are interested in learning more about investing and trading. The simulation game should also have some capability for testing a variety for investment strategies.

• Choose a stock market simulation game that has a toll-free customer service phone number and excellent e-mail support for members. The support function should be able to quickly answer any questions that members/players may have.

• Choose a stock market simulation game that is easy to use and easy to teach even to those who have never had any real hands-on investment experience.

The Risks of Playing with Your Nintendo "Wii"

Is the Nintendo Wii the most dangerous computer games console of all time? Well, you've no doubt heard or seen some of the news stories that suggest it probably is. The physical danger factor stems from the way you use the game controller that comes with the console.

In an attempt to create a more natural way of affecting the onscreen action, Nintendo have given you a controller that you swing around as you play. So, for example, if you were playing a computerized game of tennis, you would swing the controller as if it were a tennis racket in a real game of tennis. This introduces much greater interactivity and most players have reacted very favorably to this.

This novel way of using the game controller is certainly unique to the Nintendo Wii and makes it stand out from the current crop of computer gaming consoles, but it has caused problems - and even physical injury - to a minority of users who've failed to exercise the proper level of caution.

Injuries caused by the use of the Nintendo Wii fall mainly into two categories:

1) Injuries to players themselves straining muscles etc. that they aren't used to using, and

2) Injuries to innocent bystanders who've been whacked in various parts of their anatomy by flailing games players and flying controllers.

If you want to prevent injury to yourself from playing games on the Nintendo Wii then you should use a warm up routine similar to that practiced by an athlete. Don't laugh! Maybe it does sound rather silly to be warming up physically before playing computer games but, seriously, a regime of stretching exercises before playing will ensure that your body is warmed up properly and will help prevent strained muscles, ligaments and tendons.

To prevent injury to yourself if you're in the vicinity of a Nintendo Wii player, the best thing you can do is to stand as far out of harms way as possible. If you're the player and there are others sharing the room with you then just exercise reasonable caution. A modicum of common sense is usually all it takes to prevent accidents.

On of the commonest causes of Nintendo Wii injuries is failing to make sure that the strap that goes around your wrist from the games controller is properly secured. An unsecured Nintendo Wii games controller can easily slip out of your grasp and hit someone.

You should make sure to check the games controller wrist strap at regular intervals and get a replacement if the original shows any signs of wear and tear.

As long as you follow the above tips and exercise due caution when playing with your Nintendo Wii, your computer game playing should be as enjoyable and safe as possible.

What Version of the Xbox360 Console is Right For You?

Currently (Dec. 2007) Microsoft has three basic versions of the Xbox 360 console: the Xbox 360 Arcade, the standard Xbox 360 and the Xbox 360 Elite system. The base system is the same for each with added benefits to enhance gameplay and media enjoyment for each different console bundle.

The Arcade version has limited storage for arcade games. It would not be gamers first choice for a video game console. The standard Xbox 360 has a 20 Gb hard drive, which is sufficient storage for games and a few songs and a video or two. The Elite has 120 Gb of storage and comes included with a HDMI digital audio-video cable. This is for those users who expect downloading and storing many video, photos, game data or music. The HDMI cable is convenient for those that need that type of connection for their home theater system. The Elite is the only system that is all black as well.

All the systems have Silver Xbox live memberships and a wireless controller included. Game compatibility is the same for the regular and Elite consoles. They are compatible with all Xbox 360 games plus over 300 original Xbox games. The Arcade version is compatible with all Xbox 360 games.

Obviously the prices for the consoles are different. The arcade machine can be had for around $280. The standard sells for around $350. The Elite goes for $450.

The Xbox console is not that large when compared with the Nintendo Wii and Playstation 3. It is sleekly designed and has interchangeable faceplates that allow it to be fitted into a home cinema rack. The wireless controller is really cool and wonderfully convenient. The Xbox console supports four wireless controller devices.

The Xbox 360 has amazing graphics. All the games are optimized for high definition output. In addition, it has USB 2.0 ports for attaching accessories. Accessories include a steering wheel for driving games and a chat messenger that allows you to send instant messages to your friends while you are playing. These accessories are not included with the console bundle and must be purchased separately. The Xbox 360 console is HD ready for games and has Dolby Digital sound to give players a complete surround sound gaming experience.

The console will play on any television, high definition or not. You just need to have the video and audio inputs for the TV or home theater system. The Xbox 360 console plays audio CDs, as well as DVDs, stores photograph and will play mp3's. The Xbox 360 truly represents a big leap forward in next generation gaming technology.

How to Keep Young Children Busy in the Hotel Room

When you are traveling with young children it is always a challenge to keep the children busy at night or on rainy days in the hotel room. If you are lucky enough to be staying at a full service hotel with a swimming pool, games and movie rentals your job of keeping the kids busy will be easy. However if you are staying at a hotel where all these resources are not available you will have to tap into your own imagination.

The first thing you need to do is to plan ahead. Before you ever leave home you must make a list of all the games, puzzles, movies and appropriate toys you are going to bring on your trip.

Start with the games and puzzles. Pack a storage bin with board games and puzzles for the kids to do. These are perfect for the children at night or on a rainy day. To make it even more fun let the children set up a special place on the bed or in the middle of the floor to play their games. Even under a table with a blanket draped over the top will make the game playing even more fun.

Second thing to do is to take a look at your movie selection. Plan to watch some of the tried and true favorites as well as some movies the kids have not watched in a while. You can even surprise the kids with a few new movies that you have purchased especially for the trip. It is always a welcome site to see something new yet familiar so consider purchasing a video of your children's favorite cartoon or television show.

Next come the toys. Look for interactive games such as GI Joe, Polly Pockets, Barbie, Leapster hand held games and Mr. Potato Head. These toys are great for rainy days because the kids can use their imaginations while keeping themselves busy. Girls dolls with clothes are great. The girls can build homes for the dolls in the hotel room and play house while you are traveling. Dress up clothes are always a hit with both girls and boys. Consider letting the younger children walk around the hotel dressed as there favorite character.

A great trick to making the toys even more fun is to give each child a small bag or suitcase and allow them to fill it with whatever toys they want to bring. This gives the children some control over what they have and makes that bag of toys even more fun.
